1st Skaggae Festival Luzern with Shame & Skandal Family, Quatre In Toulouse, Ska-Ta-Leicht, TJ & Power Contact, Ras Snöggi (Ras I), DJ Ras Claude and very special guests with Daniela & The Connection Dance Ensemble from Cham and Jackie Song at Sedel Sat, 28 February 1998 is running for the “Fitness Statt Drogen”-campaign and presented by The Roots Connection.
Behind the festival
In 1998 nobody believed it is possible to celebrate at the Sedel Club without smoking. I wasn’t smoking at that time and I felt uncomfortable in all those clubs full of smoke. Sometimes it was hard to see the stage, because of the smoke.
With this background it was a very exotic decision to plan a festival for Ska and Reggae at Sedel under the “Fitness Statt Drogen”-campaign. But what was this campaign for? Be fit instead of taking drugs. I don’t remember well, but my friend Renés brother Patrick is working in a fitness center. He introduced me to the people of the campaign. Maybe they sponsored a little bit, but after all those years, I can’t remember what was my goal for using this campaign.
What does it say? The first idea behind this event is a “Goodbye-Party” for René who is leaving for 6 months for his first Jamaica visit. It is the very first Skaggae-Festival. The word is a fusion of Ska and Reggae and means all the different styles around Ska and Reggae.

DJ Snöggi (SLA)
The running order is starting with my brother Roger. He prepared some very special mixes for the event. Because he is teacher in Sursee he doesn’t want his real name on the flyer.
Daniela & The Connection Dance Ensemble
It’s a last minute yes from the group that is temporary built for this event. Daniela brings three other dancer on stage. My brother is playing the sound.
This is my only picture of the performance. It is something very new to the Sedel stage, but the people likes it and the dancers enjoyes it. As can be seen in the guestbook they painted backstage.
Ska-Ta-Leicht from Luzern featuring Marc Da Silva
This group is my idea after breaking up with Peacestreet. Nonsi, René and I planned to build a little chamber orchestra with violin, bass and flute. But the costumes are to expensive. It never become to a concert. But with Ska-Ta-Leicht it is different. We played three shows. Spontaneously Marc Da Silva took the microphone. I have no recording and not much memory of this concert, but these pictures.
Quatre In Toulouse from Bern
I’ve met the band before at different occasions. I’m very happy to invited them to this festival. In 2023 the band is still around (qit.ch).

Shame & Skandal Family from Luzern
With the Shame & Skandal Family René Frey started after the split with Peacestreet. This is known to be the very last show of the band. One reason is René himself. He is leaving for six month to his first visit of the island of Jamaica. This show is a kind of saying goodbye.
To upgrade the band, there is our friend Jackie Song to enter the stage with tap shoes.
Power Contact from Bern featuring Tobias Jundt (Bonaparte)
This is another exclusive band for this festival. Our friend Tobias is ready to show up with a session group he brought from Bern. I’m really sorry, I have no idea, who they were. I remember the style was kind of different from the rest, but it was already around 2 o’clock in the morning when they started. Everybody in the club was amazed of the professional quality and great sound. Tobias became famous with a lot of projects and is best known as Bonaparte. Thank you for this one and only show.
DJ Ras Claude from Luzern
At the very end and all between the shows there is yours truly DJ Ras Claude. I played with the flute over my dubs.
