The Trojans plus Peacestreet live at Schüür 1995

The Roots Connection presents on Thursday, September 21 1995 at Schüür Luzern the one and only Trojans from England and warm-up with Peacestreet.

Promotion – before the event

Original flyer for this very special event, concept and design by Sonja di Paolo

The year was a busy year for the Roots Connection. But this event was one of the legendary ones. With the arrival of The Trojans there was another landmark set to the ground. My late girlfriend Franziska made some very nice pictures at the first show of The Trojans in Zug (May 9 1991, see here). Four years later it was myself inviting one of the worlds top Ska bands. With the amazing Rudy Jones on saxophone, Natty Bo (Top Cats) on percussion and the one and only Gaz Mayall in front.

Please read the story of our trip to Gaz Mayall’s Rockin’ Blues here.

We met Gaz and The Trojans another time at the M for Music festival in Zurich (see here). And Natty Bo came with Top Cats and Megumi Mesaku years later to Luzern.

Another nice article was placed in the musical magazine of LNN (Luzerns Latest News).

That was the most massive promotion I’ve ever received from the publications around Luzern.

Sonja di Paolo did the flyer for the Laurel Aitken and The Trojans shows in 1995. She gave me this original design.

I was blessed in advance. But as you can imagine, the event itself wasn’t easy to manage. On one hand I was the promoter, the manager and director of the event. On the other hand I was a member of the warm-up band called Peacestreet.

Peacestreet (warm-up)

This is the very exclusive moment to release for the first time some of the video-recordings Roland Wüthrich did. It was a time, where not everybody was able to record some moments on video. I’m sorry for the bad quality, but it’s the best I was able to make out of it. There is no video nor picture of The Trojans, but this video shot remains the only with Peacestreet. Hope you enjoy.

From left to right front: Ras Claude (shaker), Jonas (trumpet), Hörtu (saxophone), Alex (guitar, vocals)

From left to right back: René Frey (double bass), Nonsi (guitar), Simon Gut (drums), Marc G. (keyboards)

The tune is called: Peacestreet. Filmed by Roland Wüthrich. There was a long warm-up with our band. I don’t remember well, but as far as I remember, the band was doped and guessed they are the stars of the event. So we played a full set for over 50 minutes.

  • Peacestreet
  • Jesse Jackson
  • True Stuff
  • Sata Massaghana
  • Ring The Alarm
  • El Nino De Ringo
  • Stop That Train

This is another example from the video Roland Wüthrich did. Jesse Jackson from the amazing Gaz Mayall album Floyd Lloyd & The Potato 5 feat. Laurel Aitken. With Stop That Train, Marc da Silva is showing his talent as singer.

And to finish the examples it is needed to add a track with flute. But first, just a little introduction for the audience. I introduced the whole band, but listen here

Years later I’ve got this very very nice picture (as far as I remember it is done by Eva Schätti given through Marc da Silva).

The Trojans

I remember that introduction by Gaz Mayall to the Grim Reaper. Because the band enjoyed a nice day in Luzern they walked across those wooden bridges with the paintings of the death. But listen by yourself.

Just to add another track from that amazing show I took Bellvue Special from the pen of Don Drummond. Both tracks are stamped by The Roots Connection jingle.

While The Trojans were waiting for their show, they were painting in the backstage. They left two pages in the guestbook.

This page by The Trojans in the guestbook of Peacestreet is unique. Some of the members on tour are written down here.
