I was in de audience at this concert with The Leaders featuring Lester Bowie and warmup by Depart. It was Friday, 17 March 1989 in Luzern at Casino Le Chalet
My research brought me to this excellent show in Burghausen, where the Leaders also played in 1989. I took the line-up from there:
- Lester Bowie – trumpet
- Arthur Blythe – alto saxophone
- Chico Freeman – tenor saxophone
- Kirk Lightsey – piano
- Cecil McBee – bass
- Don Moye – drums
It was at that time, that my brother Roger bought some very interesting Jazz records. The Art Ensemble Of Chicago “Nice Guys” (haven’t found a Youtube) or the amazing “Coming back, Jamaica” on the Lester Bowie’s Brass Phantasy “I Only Have Eyes For You” are nice samples, why I felt in love with this music.
One simple sample on YT demonstrates the power of live shows.
Lester Bowie Brass Fantasy 1984
The warm-up was made by Depart. At that time it was Jojo Mayer who was a young master drummer and he came together with two members of the Vienna Art Orchestra. Originally Fredy Studer (Om) was the master drummer, but with his broken arm he was replaced by Jojo. My research brought me to this three names:
- Harry Sokal (ts)
- Jojo Mayer (dr)
- Heiri Känzig (b)
