Playlist – sound samples

The sound quality is terribly bad, but the hall was too big and the sound was bad in there as well. At that time I had almost no trouble to bring my Sony Walkman inside. I used the headphones as microphones and hanged them over my breasts, one left, one right. This wasn’t too bad, but at this place there was no good sound at all in the audience.

Markus Vogel – Reggae Fever

I remember Markus Vogel (reggaefever.ch) had a stand in the hall to sell records. But I had no money for records and was too shy to go there. I know Markus from his work at radio LoRa way back and I had the privilege to listen to his emission from Luzern even that was too far for this local Zurich station (at that time it wasn’t allowed for local radio stations to sent further than in the region). With my personal antenna I received a small signal and heard my very first Ethiopians tune “I feel the spirit”, that was a milestone in my musical experience. Back in the Eulachhalle in Winterthur, where I was to shy to go to Markus, my brother and his friend went there and came back with an ordering list. This was my first order at Mill International who was renamed years after into Reggae Fever.

Background

Before that show I had this album from the Alligator shop as a direct import from Chicago, Illinois. I mean there was a great deal with a shop that sold great albums from the Alligator label as well as Shanachie records (I thought it was from Massachusetts, but I can’t remember well). At least those exclusive albums for Switzerland were even cheaper as direct import, than any record in Switzerland, but at that time, there was no record store in Switzerland with those albums as far as I know. And this album High Times All-Star Explosion was one of those. On this album there was “Bloody City” by Dennis Brown and I loved it. It was a great surprise to hear it live again.
